Favorite Photos?

Favorite photos, can only pick three.
I’d pick them all if were left up to me.
Favorite photos, not sure what to do.
Which are the three if were left up to you?

My workplace has an annual amateur photo contest every Fall. I can only enter 3 pics. These are my favorite 12. You can help me by saying which are your favorite three among them. Please reply in the comments, if you are willing.

  1. Plump cardinal in tree
  2. American red squirrel lunches at the avian cafe
  3. American blue jay gripping gutter
  4. Stuffed cheek chipmunk
  5. Chipmunk look-out in tree
  6. White-throated sparrow prepares to launch
  7. The littlest goldfinch sits on a prong
  8. Bright male goldfinch at the thistle feeder
  9. Friendly squirrel on the gutter
  10. Fully inflated mourning dove
  11. Red belly woodpecker gives me the eye
  12. Fluffy tufted titmouse

As a point of interest, I take all of my photos from the window of my home during the handful of times each day that I am able to be out of my bed. Since becoming disabled and confined to my home I can no longer get outdoors and experience the wonder of creation as I used to, so now my attention has turned to the Lord’s little creatures that find their way into my limited view.

I have developed a special love and appreciation for them as I have undertaken to learn and study each one, through both reading and direct observation. I’m learning the calls of the birds and the sounds of the squirrels and chipmunks, such that even while lying down I can usually tell who is nearby by the sounds from my window. Some of my favorite moments are when I’m granted a special view or interaction with these cute little buggers.

I’m thankful to the Lord for all of the little friends he sends my way, and to my wife, who generously feeds and looks after them (they recognize her when she goes out to feed them – the squirrels run closer and the birds perch in the nearby trees, calling to their friends to come join the feast).

Thanks for helping me decide which photos to submit! I’m partial to them all, so I’m grateful for your participation. God bless!

  1. Good stuff Craig.
    I’m partial to #1, #6, #12
Judges often pick the sharpest focus with the eye as the focal point.
They also look for “story” what is the subject saying or does it just look posed?
My favorite bird is the ladderback (is that what #11 is?), they are more rare here. They have a shy personality (compared to the blue jay).

    1. Thanks Gary, that’s good insight! Yes, #12 is lovely! I believe she is a red-bellied woodpecker (but I’m no expert). She is definitely shy. Thanks again, God bless!

    1. Oh, thank you so much, Crissy, for your encouraging words! Every good thing is of grace, to be sure. Thanks for the photo feedback. God bless!

  3. Lovely photos! My picks are 1, 7, and 11. I may be biased against the squirrels, since they have been garden pests this year, even eating my tomatoes. From the comments it looks like all the photos are popular. 😊

    1. Thank you Jeanne! Yes, I understand about the squirrels. Once they raided a whole row of crocus bulbs we had next to our sidewalk. I’ve made peace with them and like them better since my sister informed me that they are “the planters of the forests.” Thanks again and God bless!

  4. Great photos, Craig! If I had to choose, I’d vote for Plump cardinal in tree (#1), Chipmunk look-out in tree (#5), and Bright male goldfinch at the thistle feeder (#8).

I like the collage of all 12. That would be a cool photo collage to print out, frame, and hang in your house.

    1. Thanks David, no worries! It really does help me to see what others like, even if there is a variety of opinion. God bless!

  5. I love all of these pics but I choose #4, #6, and #10. Love your blog! Thanks for choosing to ‘count your blessings’ despite being in such difficult health circumstances! What a good example to me!

    1. Thank you Patricia, for your help with the photos and also for your encouragement! I have had may times of despair and anxiety (and still battle against them) but the Lord’s grace always brings me through to a state where I can once again give thanks to Him and praise Him from the heart. God bless you!
